dia numero uno

Hola from Quito!

It's great to be back! Although we're excited to be here we are also very excited to be continuing on with the journey tomorrow, down to San Lorenzo. But first an update about today! The morning started out relatively early since most of us didn't get to sleep until close to 2am and some of us had a surprise awakening at 3am. Thank God for moms! They always take care of everything. We had a quick breakfast and devotions on the third floor of the Extreme Response Headquarters, where we are staying for these first two nights of the trip. The view out the windows is an amazing one of the city, which we can enjoy during breakfast and devotions. We are reading and studying The Prayer of Jabez on this trip, if you'd like to follow along with us. :)

We were out the door by 9am and on our way to church about 45 minutes away. We attended the Remanso de Amor which held a very enthusiastic Father's Day service. Church lasted for two and a half hours. There were a wide variety of components to the service. We started with a reading of Psalm 51 in Spanish. Next we enjoyed an hour of praise and worship, all in Spanish! Our team was finally able to sing along, when we heard the music to "This is the Air I Breathe". It was really awesome to be part of a group singing simultaneously in both Spanish and English. Next we enjoyed some authentic Ecuadorian dance by the women and girls of the church. By this point in time many of the children had made their way over to the pews that our team members were sitting in. The children all around are so sweet and loving. They also thoroughly enjoy having their picture taken, even during church service. The pastor then began the service with a reading of Acts 8. He did an awesome job of switching back and forth between English and Spanish to keep all of us engaged with the service. They are preparing for some very special baptisms next week within the church. So, the message focused on how baptism changes us.

After the service wrapped up we headed back on to the bus to make the trip over to the middle of the world for lunch. We had a yummy lunch outdoors of empanadas, salad, rice, potatos, and chicken along with some delicious fresh juice.

Afterwards we spent an hour shopping at the various tiendas near the monument, followed with the traditional photos near the monument. A little secret got out among the group that the monument we were at wasn't located at the real equator. Some people were upset. ;) And so we decided to make the trip just a short distance away to the real equator. Here things got very exciting. Some of us balanced eggs on the head of a nail. We watched water flow down the drain clockwise and counterclockwise on different sides of the equator. And then watched what happens when you pour water down a drain directly over the equator. You'll have to ask your favorite team member about that experience to find out what happened when they get home. We also were educated about life in the Amazon with great examples of things which we never hope to encounter in real life...anacondas, boa constrictors, shrunken heads, and the sort.

We left the equator better educated and with plenty of pictures and souvenirs to get the trip started. By this time we were ready to start thinking about dinner. Paul and Susan took us to a food court with a variety of restaurants where we all were able to choose our own restaurant for dinner. Many of us decided to eat at El Corral, where we perplexed by the sign "DESLICE" on the door. I pulled on the door and nothing happened...we eventually made our way in and had a yummy dinner.

It has been a long day for many. Some of us are still a bit tired after the long travel day yesterday. So after enjoying your blog comments, most people are already getting ready for bed here at 8pm. Mike, however, is staying up late to pick Nicole up from the airport this evening.

On behalf of the team,
~Jennifer

P.S. An extra Happy Father's Day to all of our wonderful dads!

P.S.S. It is not likely that we will be able to post any pictures from the trip until after we are home, due to the lack of speed of the internet connections here.

P.S.S.S. Donna here! Hi family and friends! Thank you for all the posts of love for us. We are so glad we came on this mission. I know we will be blessing others, but it is already us who have received so much. Love to you all. Not much more to report this morning, Johnathan just crossed the SC border about 10:00 and is just 5 hours from GA now. The dog has traveled well. I have been organizing my stuff for the move and expect to be in the new place by Saturday. If the hot weather continues that is good news for children back home, they can swim in the pool. Not the same as the ocean, but we will make due. Today is the day for you to go to Manta and then the work begins. I miss you both and look forward to the next blog telling us all back here how the day went today. God bless you and your team. Looking forward to your next opportunity to write us back home.

  11. Becky,
I called the Rochester Schools transportation today because I knew you would have if you were here and are probably still wondering what happened ;) The lady in charge of it apologized and said she knew she had confirmed with you on Wednesday and that she was out of the office on Thurs and Fri. She left the paperwork out and the person that was supposed to schedule it for Saturday did not since it was not part of her "normal work" and she just forgot about it. Not really much she could say other than to apologize (to you and the whole group) though. Since she apologized I went back to see the old gypsy lady and had her remove the curse :D

I have been eating extra chocolate since you have been gone just so the US chocolate industry does not experience a recession with you gone. I can't do the coffee thing though - so they are on their own :)

Oh and by the way, Pepper asked if you could bring back a very tiny anaconda for her to 'play' with. Truffle just yelled "me too" from under the bed - or maybe the closet - I couldn't tell.

  12. Hey guys :)
It sounds like you guys are having a blast. But I'm sure you guys are all looking forward to the best part of the trip, being with the kidlets :)
Make sure you say Hi to Jorge, Paul, and Susan for me.

I miss you guys a ton. I'm in Tennessee right now, and the views here are awesome, but nothing compared to the view from the Orphanage, that's for sure. It does make me miss you all a ton. Hopefully if you guys go next year I can be down there with you all.

Just want you to know I'm praying for you guys.
God is so good :) This verse has really been on my heart so I just thought I would share it with you all--
"For I know the plans that I have for you" declares the Lord, "Plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future" --Jeremiah 29:11

I'm so happy you guys are able to be a part of something so amazing.
I'm especially praying for you Kelly and Mike, you two are amazing leaders!! <3
I'll be following you all like a creep on this blog. haha

Have fun, and tell everyone to try the popcorn fish, cause its my favorite!

    <3 Paula

p.s. I talked to Katrina the other day and she wanted me to tell you all Hi for her and of course tell the kids that she misses them all like crazy :)

  13. Hi Team,

Thank you all for doing God's work. My prayers are with each and every one of you for a safe and successfull trip.

I read the blog and was so interested in the water drain and egg balancing I checked it out on Youtube. I also saw that you are weaker at the equator, is that true, did anyone take the test?

Callout to my close friends: Joey, Teresa, and Jennifer. Special prayers for each of you: that you will be filled with the Holy Spririt, that your eyes will be open at all times to see opportunities to give and to receive God's love, and that your patience is timely so you may hear, listen, and connect to your suroundings, especially those in need of God's love, through you. Also, keep your eyes, and cameras, focused on the local wildlife, especially the birds. I would like to see some cool pics of neat birds that we don't have in Michigan. Also, I saw on Youtube there are monkeys in the trees near where you are staying. How cool. Have you seen any?

God bless you all, and good night.

  20. Hi Lesley, Sounds like you guys are getting into a productive routine. I'm glad you can have some fun in between all the work. Sounds like its a little warmer there than you thought it would be. Your house lost power in the storm yesterday. Not as bad by us. Everyone keep safe and use your sunscreen. Love Mom
