Whew! What a day we had today. It all begin with a 6:15 walk up 661 steps to the lighthouse not too far from our hotel. The majority of the group was brave enough to venture up before visiting the local school to play with the children before class starts. The view from the top is phenomenal. I wasn't one of them. The remainder of us meet at the school and played basketball, soccer, football, and jump rope with the students. They are so full of life and love. They thoroughly enjoy every bit of our presence and its amazing to be around people so warm. The especially love taking pictures. They push and shove to get to the camera. Once the bell rang we sadly returned to our hotel to have breakfast and complete our daily devotional in preparation for the day ahead. With only one truck to drive us to the orphanage, the team piled in the back of the bed and headed out speeding through a windy, in construction road. A small group began to walk to the orphanage until the truck returned to get us. Along the walk a puppy followed us all the way. He became part of our group and Nicole named him Roadkill. Walking through the town is so much fun to me. You see people walking through the streets, riding bikes, and sitting out front of their homes. Everyone says Bueno Dia with a smile. Their copper skin and black hair are all so beautiful. You can even see donkeys, chickens, pigs (& piglets), dogs, and cats. Eventually the truck came and we all climbed in. Of course, I was the last to climb on and the truck pulled off as I was on the bumper. I almost fell off...close call. Wait, is there a message there? We brought Roadkill and took him back to town. At the orphanage, we were introduced to the house parents. The children are spread amongst two homes which are really nice inside. We also meet Flores and Pablo, brothers whom are instructing us to mix cement and lay brick. They make it look so easy but everyone soon realized how difficult it was. The sun was shining which is abnormal during the time of year. We all sweat through our clothes and some burned their skin. It's funny to see the red patches on calves and arms. Teresa, unfortunately got ill and had to lay down. The rest of the team continued to work on buildng the retaining walls. Our break for lunch was, for lack of a better word, spectacular. Our team is also divided amongst the two homes. Each family prepares our lunch daily and they cook all morning. It so awesome that we are here to serve them yet they are serving us. It was just like being in a restaurant but even better. When we enetered the home there was a huge sign reading Bienvenidos. Our window panes were displayed on the walls. There was a vase with roses and a card welcolming Kensington Church. The table was set and soup awaited us. The food continued to come out and it was just delicious. I don't see how people work after eating those meals. Siesta anyone? Our work day ended and we moved to the local church where there was a childrens program almost like a VBS. There was songs, verse memorization, and a bible teaching. The children learned Exodus 20:4 "No hagas de nada un idolo" and had two craft projects relating to the story. We ended with snack and HUMMER trucks which they love. Back to the hotel we went for dinner. But of course we had to shower. There is literally a layer of gunk on your skin; a combination of sweat, sun block, brick dust, cement, and mud. Dinner was great as always but right before the presentation of life tokens the power went out which proved to be good because the candles made the environament more intimate. Life tokens were presented by Nicole, Joey, and Teresa followed by prayers for each individual from Teresa, Jenn, and Donna respectively. Worship went a little differently because we didn't have the music due to the lose of power. However, we practiced our Spanish songs and Kelly led Amazing Grace and Sing, Sing Sing. Of course she did! We laughed as we mocked each other...Jenn and her exclaimation points and Kelly and her loud singing. Some returned to their rooms and some stayed behind to play games. We played UNO and Jorge joined us. His one opportunity to actually use Spanish and he yells out "One" when he was down to his last card. We all burst into laughter. Green and blue look so much alike in the candle light. Who would have known. Eventually the power came back on and after reflecting on our days thus far we decided to get some rest to prepare for tomorrow. What a blast!
On the behalf of our entire team...we miss you all!
Isabel

ReplyDeleteim betting that you were one of the people to get burnt. i hope it isnt that bad. some good spanish translations you could use, although im sure you already know these. since you are working with kids you can ask"quantos anos tienes?" which is how old are you. thats all for now, I'll think of other helpful phrases for you later :D it said you guys made retaining walls, now i really wish i could be there to help. it would be just like home for me. well it was 96 today and we worked early so we could be done before it was hot but that didnt work out very well. we still worked til 3. keep having fun! and keep enjoying everyday. half way through week one! i hope you can read these. I'm not even sure if you get to see them. sleep tight, dont let bedbugs,or any other animal bite.
p.s. i can see your hotel from the satelite! go outside and wave! :)

Hi Jennifer and Team mates, Another hot day is Shelby Township. Everyone is using the pool. A few of Lizzie's friends have no air so I know they really appreciate it. It sound like you got a lot done today. I hope you didn't get too much sun. We might get some rain tomorrow. I hope so. This weekend looks great for Mary's Birthday. Dad is working crazy hours and not a happy camper. I can't wait till this machine is shipped. Aunt Ginny sends her best to you. God be with you always. Be safe and healthy Love Mom

ReplyDeleteWith all the on the job training you are getting working with cement and brick, perhaps I should defer to your expertise and let you two build the bathroom. It sounds like this mission is everything you had thought it would be and more. I would be interested in hearing more about the life tokens, what are they and how do you receive them?
Remind me that if we ever get a new pet, Nicole will not be asked to help come up with a name.
I am missing you both and trying to keep myself busy to take my mind off your absence. I will be getting the keys to the new place tomorrow. If all goes well I will be completely moved in before you return home.
I love you both and continue to pray for your safety and God's blessings. I am very proud of you and the wonderful work you and the team are doing, a little envious as well. Bye for now. I look forward to the next posting.
Funny how you get sick when retaining walls are to be built. Hmmm. Steph - are you next??!!
ReplyDeleteLoved the blog today - thanks Isabel. You made me really visualize every step of your day. You guys are all so amazing with what you are doing.
Love you guys - be safe.
Feel better BF XOXO
Love from Trevor and Lilly too.
Stephanie, Joey, Teresa,
ReplyDeleteWhat happened to the fish&rice for breakfast, lunch and dinner? Sounds like you are eating like kings! Glad to hear you are working hard, though. Remember your purpose, and keep up the good work. I'm praying for health for all of you.
I love you,
Mom

Bec,
ReplyDeleteI hope you got to work on the bricks. That way you can build your own bring/stone driveway pillar thingy at your new place when you get back!! Sounds like you guys are getting a lot done and also getting to see some nice things as well and have some experiences that will stay with you for a lifetime - what more can you ask for?
Here are a couple of phrases you might put to good while you are there:
1) Mi hijo es un gángster sin corazón, y yo necesito un abrazo (translation: My son is a cold-hearted gangster, and I need a hug.)
2) De postre quiero flan. (translation: For dessert, I'll have apple tart.)
K..do your best to work those into a conversation tomorrow :) Have fun!!

Hi Nicole,
ReplyDeleteWe certainly enjoy reading the daily update. Dad
chuckled when he read what you had named the dog. It sounds like you and your team had quite a productive day. Maybe when you get home, you will have enough experience with bricks that you can put down your own brick pavers for your patio. :) I have been trying hard to keep your flower gardens watered. Very hot and humid. Have a great day tomorrow. We love you and miss you!
Mom and Dad
Wow !! What a full day! Sounds wondeful...and You go Kelly with your singing I know we sound better when we are louder..I feel the same way when I sing! The boys helped me weed and prune flowers yesterday (they are a great help Kayden giving kisses every chance he gets!!). All three of them have found their "spot" on the bed and I think Quintin is still smitten by her but she is so cranky she will not give him a chance..he wants to play with her so badly! and do not worry we keep singing "we are family" and loudly!! I miss you both stay safe and tell the team they are doing a great job!! Thanks for the posts they are very descriptive and heartwarming! Love you, Shannon
ReplyDeleteDonna, Joey, Teresa, Nicole (and Diana, Hi! I don't know you, but hello!), I am so proud of the journey you are takng together. I know your hard work will pay off for those that need you and will affect you internally. Good luck on the remainder of your time there and take care of yourselves internally as well as physically. The blog is fabulous and it is great to hear how you all are doing. Hope you feel better Teresa, and I loved the dog's name, Nicole!

Hola Di... The posts I have been reading are truly amazing. I am very proud of you and your doings. An orphan puppy, how perfect and love his name. Maybe you can bring him home as I am sure your Aunt Diane would welcome him with her arms wide open. I love you very much and will keep you and your team in my thoughts and prayers.
ReplyDeleteLove, Dad
Teresa and Joey,
ReplyDeleteAre you feeling better Teresa? I sure hope. I see you really want me to worry about you. I see all is going well with everyone. We had some really bad storms here today. Mostly up near Joyce and Michelle, and not too much around here. Joey I bet you love the puppy you guys found. Not too sure about the name, but if you guys hadn't rescued him I guess that is exactly what he would become. Please take care and stay safe. You are both in my thoughts and prayers,
Te Amo.
