Today it is John and Patricia blogging. Hi all---and Jeanie do we have a baby yet? Now onto our day, just had to get that out, much love and hugs to you all back home but especially to little Jeanie!!. We started the day with three of us going 661 steps up the mountain to the lighthouse. We met up as a team together in the schoolyard arriving at about 730 a.m. and played with the kids basketball to kick ball to football, jump rope, duck, duck goose.
After, back at La Cueva, we did devotions and the subject was coming out of your comfort zone. Breakfast was wonderful, fresh juice, tasteful cheese pastries. We are fed well but of course we work hard.
In two trucks, some of us inside, some of us in the back we rode up the mountain to do our work. We now have professional brick layers-Diana and Donna erected a mother/daughter wall!! John and Nick worked on cement mixing. They had a rough time carrying 120#bags up the stairs by themselves. The mixing is done on the ground with shovels as the small mixer is broke. Juanita, the house mom of #1, brought wonderful tasty desserts as a treat to us. It was cooler today, cloudy and we sweated less. Diana still put on sunscreen though, wanting no more burn.
After we broke down wooden pallets, saving all even nails for recycling, we used the boards to build a fence around the perimeter of the orphanage. Ecuadorian ingenuity and engineering!
While the team was working, I Patricia, had the opportunity to meet with two student interns, Nelly Cotera and Rocio Perez from the University here. They told me in all of Manta, there are only four psychologists. The students come once a week to work with the children, individually or in sibling groups. I shared materials I had brought including the donated screener in Espanol. They were excited. They do not speak/read much English. What info I brought in English will be translated by Raquel. Raquel is here teaching English thru September. They asked me to help during two sessions. One session was with a 15 month old toddler and one was with a four year old. Pearl translated for us. We all wished we could speak a common language cause there was so much to share.
We stopped for lunch. House one’s was homemade soup with slices of corn on the cob, lima beans, cucumbers, carrots-delicious! Main course was chicken, noodles and plaintains.
At the end of the workday, most of us were exhausted but some (Becky, Stephanie, Tonia, Diana played volleyball with the three local workmen). The girls held their own and did us proud.
Someone donated money and after much shopping and thought, a new Nissan X-trail was purchased for the orphanage. We suggested next time it should be a GM, Ford or Chrysler product.
After a full day of hard work, Teresa, Joey and Ann climbed those 661 steps up to the lighthouse. The rest of us washed up and got ready for Jorge and Valida’s tasty recipes.
John then Diana and Donna gave their life tokens. Diana’s will be left here in Ecuador. John will bury his in the sands on the beach of La Cueva.
We finished the day by practicing our Spanish songs that we will sing when we visit the dumpsite. We have added movements to one of songs. You will have to ask us to share that with you when we come home, especially Kelly and Nicole etc version!!
That’s all, take care, Love John and Patricia
PS Jeanie, Anita, Patti, Amy, Mike, Rich, Robert—love ya Angela-next year???? Cassie maybe you too???

I can't believe it will be one week already tomorrow! Kitties are really starting to miss you Joey. They are glued to my leg while I'm there. I've been going there before I go to work in the morning, so I give them lots of hugs and kisses to get them through the day. Maybe next week I'll pick them up by their paws and turn them upside down in preparation for you coming home.
ReplyDeleteYou have four messages from your cousins:
KT - "Hi"
Michelle - "Peace"
Allison - Hopes you're having a good time and wants to know if you got lost.
Sara - "Good wishes" and "Old Christina and Steve".
So glad its Friday! What a busy, busy week. Can't wait til the shutdown and our trip!
Steph - Hope you're hanging in there! Did I tell you how incredibly proud of you I am??!!
Love and prayers to all of you. Be safe. XOXOXO

no name just yet... congratulations grandma murphy and pa-pa john, you both did very well on this one!!! =)
sounds like you are all working up a storm, good luck and keep up the good work, I will post this twice - just in case.
Tonia, Your home weathered the storms just fine Thursday evening. Had NO problem getting Malcomb and Riley inside when the wind began. Finished the front lawn in the rain but atleast it got done. No vegetables yet to eat from the garden, but your herbs are huge.
ReplyDeleteWe wondered if you are one that climbs the 661 steps to lighthouse each day, that would keep anyone in shape for a marathon!!
This blog stuff is just wonderful for those of us at home missing you all. Can't wait to see pictures of the people you speak of and the wall the team is building. Also, glad someone explained about the life tokens. May God continue to bless each one of you for your service to the kingdom. Love MOM
Hi Jennifer and team mates, I had a wonderful day with the boys. Travis was up at 5:30 am. Waiting for Grandma. We painted, play doh, tents, cars, wii, and so much more. Alex slept in till l0. Travis took 3 baths also. He's one clean kid. I really do miss the boys. But Lizzie needs me too. This has been one busy summer. How are things your way ? We hope you are doing well. Have you gotten any free time to go looking for monkey's again? Do the children remember you from your other trips? I'm sure they have gotten big. We miss you. God bless you always. Stay safe and healthy. Love Mom & Dad
ReplyDeleteHello Nicole!
ReplyDeleteGreetings from Panama! Ok, well I'm not really in Panama, but it would be really bizarre if I was. So close but so far!
Also, can I please recommend using a portion of my donation to build Roadkill something really cool out of bricks. Some would suggest maybe a dog house, but I realize this could be used by a child in lieu of a dog. Maybe just give him one to chew on for 20 minutes or so. Con el dinero baila el perro. Also this may soon become a relevant phrase: ¿Puedes llamar a un doctor? Un pastor alemán me mordío en la pierna izquierda.
I heard you also purchased a Nissan. I hope it is yellow. If it breaks for some reason, please share this phrase with the team: No soy el dueño de este burro, lo rente.
Come back healthy and safe. You are in my prayers! God bless!
Your dearest brother,
Adam
P.S. Realmente no puedo hablar español; solo aprendí unas frases de una página web.
Hola GOA ladies (and Joey!!)
ReplyDeleteI feel Diana's pain... I made the mistake of going out in a pool this week without sunscreen... OWWW. Tell her to use aloe if she has it!
Lots of hot weather here. The AC has been cranking.
Tomorrow is Jeanette and Paul's wedding!! I will be sure to take lots of pictures to share, she is going to be beautiful I'm sure!
Be safe, you're in my prayers!
~Erin

Bec,
ReplyDeleteSorry I didn't post comments yesterday - but I have a feeling *you're* not ;) It is gorgeous here today - sunny and abut 82 and I am just taking a break for lunch before heading back out again. It has officially been a week since you left DTW and I am sure it has blown by for you guys.
I have always thought it was more important to *show* people how you live *your* life rather than *tell* people how to live *theirs*. That is the way to bring people into a relationship with God rather than to chase them away with judgement. And that is what you are all doing with this trip you are on. Its a wonderful thing :) (I want a cut if anyone decides to put that little saying on a t-shirt or bumper sticker)
Okay, so I didn't mean to get all serious there, I'll leave that for the rest of the post-ers ;) Other news, Michael Jackson did not leave me anything in his will, including his chimp bubbles...so I am still without a monkey. I have not been by the local DQ to check the blizzard flavor of the day yet :( and I could really use your expertise in picking out flooring this weekend because I need to order it while the sale is on.
I need to get back out and enjoy the sun..but I did come up with another useful phrase for you again today: "Los pingüinos están en el wáter" which translates to "The penguins are in the toilets." Enjoy!

ReplyDeleteThey say home is where the heart is, so right now my home is in Ecuador. My residence is now moved in to. Bob helped Matt and me load up last night and Paul A.K.A. Andrew in the passion play came down to the new place along with Matt, Kris and Lexi. Puppa and Joseph came over, with Puppa supervising and supplying pizza pizza for the hungry hoard. Kris has been cleaning and putting shelf liner in and Lexi helped carry smaller boxes in. Lexi loves it down here and I promised her that she could come and stay with Auntie Donna for a few days and swim over at the apartment. She is stoked and can't wait to see you. Leisa stopped by for a swim with Jos and Lexi and she and Lisa may come back later.
I still have a lot of odds and ends in Frankenmuth, but for the most part I am moved in. One more week and then both of you will be back in my loving arms. It seems like a month since I have seen you. I am sure I will survive but just to hear your voice would be a great treat. I love you both and continue to beam with pride at the wonderful things that you are doing. Blog you later.
hey stephanie!
ReplyDeletesorry i havent commented in a couple days. i bet you did fantastic in volleyball, and who was the first person to decide to count how many steps it was to the lighthouse? sounds like a dumb thing to do. what if you trip at 372 steps and lose count? do you start over? or if you take one big step for every 3 little steps? does it mess it up? this really concerns me. well guessing from what you guys get to eat, i dont think you will have problems losing weight. when you get home tell your grandma that I'm proud of her for knowing what sound a lamb makes. =] well im sure you and everyone else has been enjoying the trip. i didnt think of more phrases to say, im sure you know more spanish than me by now anyways. i miss you! i have surprises for you when you get back. just more than 7 days now!
ps. your voicemail is full as of yesterday on your phone. not cool at all.

Hi Jennifer and Team mates, Well we just finished having Marys birthday party. Everyone was happy to go swimming and eating everything in sight (Travis) I sure don't know where he puts it. We get Manny until Tuesday. He is being quite quiet right now. I know he misses Mary and Mike already. But Lizzie will take care of him and Koby is helping with sharing his toys and food. I guess we will be going to the cottage on Thursday night. So I won't be sending my good wishes after that but you know you are always in my thought and prayers. Keep up the good work and stay safe and healthy . God is watching over you always. Love Mom and Dad

ReplyDeleteJust after 10:30 p.m. Saturday night. I have organized pretty well and the place could accept visitors without too much embarassment. This is the first chance I have had to sit down, other than the stolen moment when I sent the blog earlier. The power is back on at your house and Mom and Dad are back from Sutton's Bay. I am very tired and I think that I will sleep well tonight. I am looking forward to the next blog from Ecuador to find out what went on today. I love you and miss you, when you get back I might just smother you with kisses and love. I will blog you tomorrow.
Mom and Diana-

diana- im so proud that you went on this trip. i know you're helping so many people and leading them to God. i'm so glad you left your life token down there (i can't wait to hear about that) miss you!
