It's Thursday morning in Ecuador, a little after 10am. I'm sitting in the kitchen at the visitor's housing, where Paul and Susan are now living, typing this blog. Out the window in front of me, some children are playing on the play scape. Kelly is getting ready to continue building her wall with Mike while John and Isabel are mixing up the mortar down the way. Teresa and Joey are on their way down to the "Prayer Chair" where they will be praying for the next hour. Tonia, Becky, Lesley, Bethany, Stephanie, Nicole and Donna are setting up the stations for today's brick work. Beyond the orphanage property, several miles away, I can see the ocean. It is an awesome view! Diana is upstairs working on the team's laundry today. She needs to stay out of the sun after several days of sunburn. Patricia is meeting with the children of the orphanage today as they visit with the psychologist. Some of the older children are beginning to make their way down to the work site to see what is going on with the retaining wall. They don't have school today (there is some obscure holiday today), and I expect that they'll be helping out with the work today as they have done in years past. It's a great opportunity for our team and the children to work together and form relationships. We are hopeful that the section of wall we have been working on the past two days will be completed today. Nathan is hopping across the yard in his pajamas squealing a bit as I think he just hurt his foot. Sarah Fay just came into the house. She's three years old, and talking now!
I am supposed to tell you all about yesterday, as we are a day behind in our blogging. Wednesday started out very much like Tuesday. Some of the team, although a smaller group, headed up to the lighthouse for a morning workout, while the rest of the group opted for the shorter route to the local school. The children were there a bit earlier, and ready to play with the team. They all assume that we are fluent in Spanish and regularly run up to us and ramble off several sentences that most of us do not understand. Despite the language barrier, we have no problem playing! Ann and Raquel, an Extreme Response volunteer living at the orphanage for about four months, have been visiting the school several times a week to teach the children English. We have in turn been practicing a bit with them. Nicole is very passionate about the song, "Heads, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes!" Teresa is all about teaching the children "Baa says the lamb!" After an hour or so of laughter and smiles, we headed back to La Cueva for devotions and breakfast.
Today's devotion asked the question, "What is your enduring passion?", a question that I think all of us need to ask ourselves. We also discussed John 9 and the message many of us heard just before leaving for the trip, given by Craig Mayes at Kensington's New Community. We all were reminded of the opportunities that are there for us when we take the time to "see" throughout our day. Breakfast was delicious as usual. Paul Fernane, one of the missionaries we are working with, and Nick Carnhill, who is also with Extreme Response and working at the orphanage for the next year or so, came down in a truck to pick up our team and take us to the orphanage. When we arrived, we took a few moments to read the blog as well as your comments, which everyone loved! Becky turned many shades of red as all of the comments were read aloud to the team. That is the plan for this year's blog as there is very limited access to computers in this area. So please know, we do read your comments each morning before we begin our day!
We continued our work on the retaining wall throughout the day. Several sections have been completed (there are 10 sections for our first project). The sun was shining brightly, and the sunblock is being used up quickly. Lunch at house 1, for half of the team consisted of pork plantains, a potato, tomato, celery, and rice as well as pea soup which is traditionally eaten after you fill your bowl full with fresh popped popcorn. Our beverage was apple pop. It tastes like you are drinking a jolly rancher. When the work day was complete we had a birthday party for Alex, who is living in house 2. This was the first birthday party he had ever had despite the fact that he was turning seven years old! It was complete with games and crafts, balloons, a birthday hat and cake! For those of you who know the tradition around here, yes, Juanita smashed his face into the cake! After playing for a bit, it was time to head back down the mountain to La Cueva.
When we arrived some of the team decided it was time to take our first trip into town. Ten of us headed out on foot to check out the local scene. On our way we spotted our first whale of the trip. It was spouting and flapping it's tail. Such an amazing site! We hope to see one jumping soon! We made our way to the local "stores" where we were hoping to find our favorite cookies, Amor (a wafer type cookie with a creme center ina variety of flavors), or some Poosh gum for Kelly. We visited several stores and found a few packages of cookies. I expect they'll be stocking up soon now that they know that we're looking for them. We found that one "store" had ice cream which ranges in price from 10 cents to about 75 cents. Of course we're more than happy to buy for the children who are nearby, but within minutes, we could have the entire town show up hoping that we'll buy them all ice cream. Things got a little crazy for a minute, but we avoided any major chaos, and were able to give 15 or so kids a yummy treat of ice cream. At the last store, Bethany was excited to find that they were selling Pepsi! It's too bad we can't post the picture of Bethany with her 3 liter.
We made it back in time for dinner, which was excellent as always! Patricia and I shared our life tokens after dinner. I'm not sure how to describe a life token...but it is more a process of giving than recieving. It is a way that each of us shares a piece of our life and who we are with the team. The night wrapped up for the team with some singing! We are practicing several Spanish songs that are coming along nicely. By 8pm, most of us are ready to shower and get to bed. Our days are long, but full of joy and love! This is an amazing place to be!
Well, it's time for me to get down to the worksite. We're wrapping up a bit early today to play with the kids who are home due to the holiday. Tonight we are having dinner at La Cueva with Flores and Pablo and their families! There will be over thirty of us at Jorge's for dinner! It will be wonderful! Please pray for our continued safety and strength!
On behalf of the team,
~Jennifer
P.S. Paul just popped in the door to say "Hi to Paula!"
P.S.S. Donna asks that you, Mom, email Shannon the blog. Thanks!

Hello good people. I pray that all is well with you. Your journey intrigues and motivates us back here at Great Oaks. We are trying to keep up with the journey of our beloved colleagues, who truly are living beyond measure. We miss Donna, Teresa and, surprisingly, Nicole (even spartans need appreciation)! However, we truly respect what you are doing and why you are doing it. I must say that the obscure holiday comment really tickles my fancy! Also, apple pop is definitely a new flavor this way. We can only hope that the mission is transcedent and that your willingness to give of yourselves inspires others to do the same. Stay Blessed and stay well (feel better, Chapa; we need you back here to break down data)! Au Revoir, The Great Oaks Crew
ReplyDeleteMom and Diana-
ReplyDeleteThe blogs everyday are amazing and I'm so jealous of everything you guys are doing. Ecuador sounds absolutely amazing and I can't wait until you guys come home and I can hear everything in detail. Diana- I'm so sorry you got so sunburned! but I'm not going to lie when I say I laughed when I read you were doing laundry because you never do any here :) haha and I'm sorry in advance for saying that because now you're whole team knows! But I'm sure you're having the experience of a lifetime and I know God is doing amazing things through you, keep up the awesome work.
Mom- I can't believe the things you guys are doing. Everything you guys have accomplished is so awesome. I'm actually now considering a mission trip sometime in my life because reading these blogs inspired me so much. Any tarantulas yet? :P
Me and Jena miss both of you guys but we are doing great. We spend the night at Lisa's house with her dog Codi and that was fun. Jena of course was snippy but they are best friends now :) Ethan also says hello and we all can't wait for you guys to come back! Oh, and I got a 4.0 in my summer class! :D Well continue to keep up the amazing work you guys are doing, I love and miss you both!

Teresa,
ReplyDeleteYour sister Celia is so amazing. And beautiful too.
Love Mom
BF, J, and Steph,
ReplyDeleteSo you guys read these blogs out loud huh? I wonder if mom knows that?
Anyhoo...
Sounds like you guys had an awesome day yesterday. You sure keep busy. I think I understand the life tokens, but make sure you guys explain that to me when you get back.
Looks like I may have to water your plants. Not sure Julio is staying over. DON'T PANIC!!! (Please disregard yesterdays comment about the daisies - they're fine - really).
Joey - Meow, meow, meow, meow, meow, meow, meow.
Love you and miss you. Be safe. xoxo
Bec,
ReplyDeleteBased on todays blog, it sounds like I might be in trouble if you're turning red during comments. This is to everyone on the trip - please don't pick on Becky because she chooses to befriend strange people. And...since there was no official request for me to stop, I will continue my comments :) I guess I will find out if you are *really* mad or not if you sneak that monkey back for me or not. :D
So it has been really hot here as everyone has been saying in the comments, but a big storm rolled through parts of metro-detroit today. My crappy little city got hit especially hard and I came home to branches all over my yard and a dead tree *partly* down, but more hovering over my backyard. It would have been better if it had just fallen! I am not sure what to do with it, so if you get a chance to work on removing any trees around the orphanage while you are there, please take that opportunity and then when you're back you have a job over at my place. I'll buy the blizzard - (flavor of the day today is chocolate strawberry btw).
I did call over to independence twsp today btw and just so you know there are no *reported* injuries to any of the turtles or chipmonks near your place. There was however a report of a garden gnome who freaked out during the storm and had to be taken to a local hospital to be sedated. :)
In the interest of being helpful once again I wanted to include a couple more phrases you might find useful in your daily activities. The first is: Donde puedo comprar un bigote falso para mi perro? (which translates to "Where can I buy a large brown fake Moustache for my dog?")
The second is: A mi llama se le ha caido una pata y querria comprar una rueda de repuesto, por favor. (which translates to : "The leg has fallen off of my Llama and so I'd like to buy some sort of replacement wheel please"
I will work on some more helpful phrases for tomorrow. I hope you're taking lots of good pics and getting a lot out of it. Dip your toes in the ocean for me! L8r :)
-your crazy friend
Hi Jennifer and team mates, just a quick note to let you know how Marys birthday went. They didn't go to the concert because of the storm. But DTE didn't cancel it either. Nancy and Mary thought it was to wet also. Lizzie and I will be watching the boys tomorrow. So everyone can get ready for the fireworks party in the Clems. (as Mary would say) She doesn't know about the party for her yet. We will be getting Manny on Saturday until Tuesday. I hope Koby can stand it. We have been working on the basement and have alot of stuff for you yard sale when you get back. But it is still a work in progress. Baby steps. We love you and miss you like crazy. Lizzie wants to drive your car. But I won't let her of course. God will keep you safe and healthy. We love hearing from you in the blog. You sound very happy and busy. I hope you get to see more whales. Love to all Mom & Dad
ReplyDeleteDonna What an eventful day. It is a good thing Leisa blogged when she did, as the power went out at your house. Your mom and dad had power, I had power at the Apt, but your house was amish. During the storm, Jena was reaquainting herself with the basement. I had to head back up to Frankenmuth tonight, but I took LuLu and Ethan out for steak at Logan's first. Fortunately, I had to stop by the Apt and Leisa caught me before I left town cause her car wouldn't start. Think it is just the battery and we can jump start it tomorrow morning when I get back into town. Johnathan called and he sounds great. He met the man that wrote "Great Balls of Fire" the Jerry Lee Lewis story. He has apparently sent a copy to Jerry Lee to sign for him and will also sign it when it gets back. He has also arranged for Johnathan to play a couple of gigs this weekend. AND THEY PAY!!!!!
ReplyDeleteDiana Wow I am so glad that you are getting proficient at laundry, since I traded laundry hook up for a pool, I will need a good laundress. The sunburn will pass quickly. God has, does and will guide you through life and he has big plans for you. I am looking forward to seeing you and hearing of all your adventures, joys and experiences.
Donna Dearest I miss you terribly but I know that when you get home the light of God will shine brightly from you, due to this mission. I think about the wonderful path we are on together and I know that we are blessed by God the only Love that is greater than ours. I think about our song, play it in the car and long for the day it is sung at our wedding, which Johnathan consented to do.
ReplyDeleteIt seems the lyrics were written specifically for us and to hear it sung by my son will make a magical day even more wonderful.
"Oh I wonder what God was thinking, when he created you. I wonder if He knew everything I would need, Because he made all my dreams come true. When God made you, He must have been thinking about me." I love you honey and I am doing great, so work hard, pray hard, love with a CHRISTian heart and come home to me in one piece.
Hello there to the whole team!
ReplyDeleteA fond smiley wave for Teresa, Donna, Nicole, Joey (and poor Diana with the sunburn! That was me as a kid - ALWAYS!)!! Your days sound amazing, exciting, moving, adventurous and giving. Peace to all of you as you rest tonight.
And miles to go before I sleep.
Laura Schnurstein
Hi Bethany,
ReplyDeleteIt's mom again, I really enjoy reading about all your Ecuadorian activities! Glad you found Pepsi! That blog entry made me laugh. That is so you! Nothing new in Bloomfield Hills. We had horrible storms last night, some suspect it was a tornado. Macomb County got hit pretty hard. We faired pretty well. The kitties hid most of the night. I paid your bill yesterday. Your car is fine. George wonders where you are. Brett & now Ben are both bothering him. Going to see the new Transformer movie tonight with Brett. He is very excited. I miss you sweets! Gotts get back to work.
I love you. MOM
I enjoy reading the blog very much. All the little details give a glimpse of the experience. Sometimes all the names get confusing but its not a problem. May you continue to build the Kingdom in the work you do, your interactions with each other and the people you encounter, in Jesus' name I pray. Tom S.
ReplyDeleteahh What a surprise. Jen I was not expecting to see my name in your blog. lol that just made my day :) Tell Paul I said hello back!
ReplyDeleteJust wanted you guys to know that you are all so amazing :)
"The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field" Luke 10:2
Thanks so much for being the workers! It's so great and God I'm sure is so proud of you all. Have fun with the kids!!! <3
Paula
oh and p.s. Just so you're all not totally out of the loop, in case you don't already know Michael Jackson died yesterday! Crazy huh?
Michael and Kelly,
ReplyDeleteWe are so proud of you and of all you are accomplishing. We really enjoy following the team's progress through the daily blogs.
How blessed the children are in having you in their lives not only by your example but in your accomplishment in the progression of the orphanage.
If you look up to the sky every evening and look at the stars, we will also be looking at the same stars, under the same sky and know that we will be saying a prayer to God - that he will watch over you and your mission.
Love, Mom and Dad
